EBI Launches Inaugural Giving Year of Just One World Foundation

11/11/19

Foundation will honor the life and charitable actions of Lenny ‘Route 29 Batman’ Robinson and his connection with the once critically injured daughter of EBI CEO Richard Kurland

Employment Background Investigations (EBI) Inc., one of the nation’s largest privately-held employee background screening firms, today announced the launch of the inaugural giving year for the Just One World Foundation beginning Nov. 15, 2019. The foundation, established by EBI CEO Richard Kurland and his wife Marti, will raise money to save the lives of children in need in memory of former EBI investor Lenny ‘Route 29 Batman’ Robinson, who through a remarkable concurrence of events will forever be connected to Kurland’s daughter Georgia. Robinson gained international notoriety in 2012 when Montgomery County, Md. police posted dash-camera video footage of him being pulled over on Route 29 in his custom Batmobile and Batman costume. The local superhero was tragically killed Aug. 16, 2015, in an automobile accident on Interstate 70 in Maryland.

Exactly two years to the day, Aug. 16, 2017, following the death of Robinson, Kurland witnessed his 10-year-old daughter, Georgia, nearly killed in an ATV accident in Montana. After enduring more than a week in an intensive care unit in Montana, Georgia fortunately recovered well enough to travel by air ambulance to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a life-saving lymphatic embolization procedure, to be performed by Dr. Yoav Dori. Just two years prior, Dr. Dori developed a revolutionary surgery with a 99% success rate to correct life-threating lymphatic injuries of children who are usually born with congenital lymphatic abnormalities. By coincidence the date of Georgia’s surgery was Aug. 29 – just like the route that made Robinson a viral star years ago. Thankfully, Georgia’s surgery and recovery were a success.

Inspired by the charitable actions of his former business partner, and the medical care that saved his daughter’s life, Kurland created the Just One World Foundation to help other children in need.

“As a founding investor of EBI, Lenny dedicated much of his time visiting sick children in local hospitals to bring them hope, inspiration and strength,” said Kurland. Robinson along with his brother were initial investors in Kurland’s startup, before Kurland bought them out in 2007. “We are forever connected through business and the one world theory of coincidences, unus mundus, through the date of Lenny and Georgia’s accident.”

As EBI prepared to celebrate its 25-year anniversary, Kurland reached out to Scott Robinson, Lenny’s brother, to share his plan to dedicate a Batman-themed coffee lounge in EBI’s corporate headquarters in memory of Lenny. As they were catching up, Scott made the connection of dates and numbers – Aug. 16 and the number 29 – of the tragic events linking his brother and Kurland’s daughter. Fueled by an overwhelming sense of gratitude that Lenny was more than just a business partner, but a possible guardian of his daughter, Kurland decided to expand upon the dedication of the coffee lounge to include a foundation that will continue Robinson’s legacy of assisting sick and terminally ill children.

Taking place during National Philanthropy Month, the Just One World Foundation ribbon-cutting ceremony for the LBR Batman4Ever Lounge will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. EST at EBI’s Owings Mills office. In memory of Robinson, the Batman Lounge will feature a custom Batman4Ever graphic and other authentic memorabilia worn by Lenny “Batman” Robinson. The ceremony will feature members of Robinson’s family, EBI and representatives of Lifebridge Health’s Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai, Hope for Henry, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Frontier Program.

“Lenny was a beloved local hero who embraced the Batman persona in his unwavering commitment to deliver hope and strength to sick and terminally ill children,” Kurland continued. “The Just One World Foundation is our way of honoring him and to empower Sinai, Hope for Henry, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to continue to pursue transformative research, while delivering hope to children everywhere. Just as Lenny always had in a superhero way.”

The EBI Just One World Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, with EBI absorbing all administrative costs. The foundation will raise money, in-kind donations, along with volunteer hours for the three organizations that represent the life-saving bridge that connects Georgia and Lenny Robinson.
