Peter Karanjia Joins DLA Piper’s Telecom and Appellate Practices in Washington, DC

3/4/19

DLA Piper announced today that Peter Karanjia has joined the firm’s Telecom and Appellate practices as a partner in Washington, DC. He will serve as chair of the Administrative Law Appellate practice.

Karanjia focuses his practice on appellate and regulatory litigation, with a particular emphasis on the telecommunications and technology sectors. He previously served as deputy general counsel of the Federal Communications Commission from 2010 to 2013, where he argued a number of precedent-setting appeals and was responsible for overseeing all of the agency’s litigation, and as special counsel to New York Solicitor General Barbara Underwood from 2007 to 2010.

“The addition of Peter, who has an excellent reputation in the telecommunications industry and brings valuable and wide-ranging appellate experience, will help us meet the growing demand, both in the US and internationally, for guidance on the complex telecom, regulatory and high-tech legal issues faced by our clients,” said Michael Senkowski, co-chair of DLA Piper’s global Telecom practice.

“As a former deputy general counsel of the FCC, Peter brings extensive experience in government-facing litigation, including cases involving federal preemption, and his practice will bolster our platform in the region and across the country,” said Jeff Lehrer, managing partner of the firm’s Washington, DC, office. “We are pleased to welcome him to the firm.”

Karanjia is the latest addition to DLA Piper’s Telecom practice, which has recently welcomed associates Peter Shroyer, Melissa Turcios, Angela DeMahy and Ariel Diamond (all of Washington, DC). He has been repeatedly recognized by Law360 as an “MVP of the Year” for his "successes in high-stakes litigation," and Chambers USA (2018) recommends him for litigation and enforcement defense.

He joins from Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, where he was co-chair of the firm’s Appellate Practice, and received his LL.M. from Harvard Law School and his M.A. and B.A. in Law from Oxford University.
