FDLI Names Susan C. Winckler CEO

Susan C. Winckler to Lead Organization, Effective November 6

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 -- The Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) announces the selection of Susan C. Winckler as the organization's new President and Chief Executive Officer.

FDLI is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization committed to providing high-quality education and a neutral forum for the generation of ideas and discussion of food and drug law and public policy.

Winckler is replacing James J. Kelly, who announced his departure from FDLI in late summer.

"FDLI has a rich, unbroken tradition of quality leadership," said Frederick Degnan, Chair of the FDLI Board of Directors. "Susan Winckler continues that tradition -- and adds to it. She brings the perfect mix of experience, vision, and legal talent to guide FDLI in these important times -- important for FDA, regulated industry, academia, and the public at large. We are delighted at our good fortune."

From January 2007 until June 2009, Winckler, a pharmacist and attorney, served as Chief of Staff at the US Food and Drug Administration.

Winckler most recently served as the Managing Director for the Medical Products Practice of Leavitt Partners, LLC, a firm headed by former Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt, specializing in providing strategic advice to senior executive teams. Winckler will retain a limited affiliation with Leavitt Partners.

Prior to joining the FDA, Winckler had served in various positions with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the national professional society of pharmacists, departing APhA as their Vice President for Policy and Communications and Staff Counsel. In that capacity, she was responsible for coordinating the Association's legislative, regulatory and private sector advocacy agenda and public relations programs. Winckler served as a frequent spokesperson for the Association for media interviews, on Capitol Hill, and with external organizations.

"I am pleased to join the FDLI team, and to support the Institute's efforts to advance the understanding of food and drug law and regulation," noted Winckler. "As a neutral forum, FDLI plays an important role in providing education and supporting the exchange of ideas regarding state and federal policies, as well as informing those policies."

Winckler is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and the Georgetown University Law Center, magna cum laude. She is a licensed pharmacist in Iowa and admitted to the bar in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Founded in 1949, FDLI publishes the award-winning, peer-reviewed Food and Drug Law Journal; the bimonthly magazine Update; FDA Directory; and dozens of books and publications for attorneys, regulatory affairs practitioners, scientists, health care professionals, government employees and marketers in the food and drug field.
