Six hundred friends and supporters ofPenn-Mar Human Services will gather for the nonprofit’s 26th Annual Penn-Mar Black Tie Gala on Saturday, March 3, at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Hunt Valley, Md., with the goal to raise $600,000 to help sustain the nonprofit’s mission of “transforming life into living” for hundreds of men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) Penn-Mar supports in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

This year’s gala honorees are Penn-Mar patrons Ann and Michael Hankin, of Butler, Md. Graduating together from the University of Virginia School of Law, Ann and Michael have over the years been involved with many educational, environmental and human service organizations and causes in Maryland and beyond.

For more than a decade, Ann worked as an attorney at Piper & Marbury and U.S.F. & G. She chaired a significant capital campaign for The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore and served as chair on the school’s board for three years. She has also served as a trustee of the Baltimore School for the Arts and Paul’s Place, and is senior warden at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Western Run Parish and on the Dean’s Council of the Washington National Cathedral. Michael, president and CEO of Brown Advisory, has served as trustee and vice-chairman of Johns Hopkins Medicine, trustee of The Johns Hopkins University, chair of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, and the Baltimore Community Foundation. In addition, he has served as president of the Land Preservation Trust, trustee of the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, and chairman of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore and the Maryland Zoo. The parents of three children, the couple are enthusiastic supporters of equestrian sports. Their horses have competed in steeplechase races in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina and Georgia.

Held every first Saturday in March at the start of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Penn-Mar’s signature fundraising event, first held in 1992 with a modest guest list of 25, today draws more than 600 supporters to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of Penn-Mar’s operations and innovative services for adults with I/DD. The Founding Sponsor for this year’s gala is Brown Advisory, and high-level sponsors include Kinsley Construction, Inc., Glatfelter Insurance Group, PeoplesBank, and Cigna.

The 26th Annual Penn-Mar Black Tie Gala, this year themed “California Dreaming,” will take guests on a tasteful tour through the wines of Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction, followed by a multi-course gourmet dinner with paired wines. In addition, the evening will include a spirited live auction to be followed by live music and dancing.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, and individual tickets to the gala are $200.
