As the new year unfolds, work is moving along at The Meadows site and the related Green Spring Road realignment project in Abingdon.
On Wednesday, the first scheduled rock blasting occurred on The Meadows site, where a shopping center and sports complex are being built. The blasting occurred just before 3:30 p.m. and was done for drainage purposes, according to Abingdon Fire Chief John McCormick. At this time, it is the only scheduled blast but more are expected, he said.
This initial blast was rescheduled twice. It was first set to occur on Dec. 28 but was delayed until Jan. 2 due to a problem with a drilling machine. It was then delayed by another day because of the cold temperatures.
