State Report Details Ways NCI Can Reduce Costs For Students

A state report shows 11 potential ways in which the New College Institute (NCI) could reduce costs for students to take educational courses and programs there.

The options are broken into two groups – ones that could be done with minimal investment of extra resources and ones that would need even more resources to accomplish, a letter from State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) Executive Director Peter Blake to the state House and Senate finance committee chairmen shows.

“They are all viable,” NCI Executive Director Leanna Blevins said of the options. However, the state would need to provide funding for those options which would require more resources, she emphasized.

State-funded NCI, in uptown Martinsville, opened in 2006. Through partnerships with universities statewide, it offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs plus professional development and training programs designed to provide students the education and skills they need for jobs in Southern Virginia, especially ones that industries and other businesses have had a hard time filling.
