Endowment Will Help Recruit UVa Faculty

As part of its effort to recruit and retain competitive faculty, the University of Virginia has created a $75 million, multi-year plan to support about 70 endowed professorships.

Endowed professorships help fund salaries for emerging, mid-career and distinguished scholars and also can support the recruitment of graduate students and laboratory space. The positions are typically highly competitive, offer enhanced salaries and have additional responsibilities to maintain a research profile.

“Endowed professorships have been a challenge to secure in numbers sufficient to reward our existing faculty and to help recruit the best new faculty,” Ian Baucom, dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, said in an email. The College, which is the largest department on Grounds, currently has 52 endowed professorships.
