Regional health care can soon enter a new chapter after Virginia Department of Health Commissioner Marissa Levine on Monday approved the merger of the area’s two largest providers.
Ballad Health, the name chosen by Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health System, is now expected to become a reality following the commissioner’s order conditionally approving their request for a cooperative agreement under Virginia law.
It coincides with last month’s similar approval of a Certificate of Public Advantage by Tennessee Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner.
