Loudoun Supervisors Look For More Regulation Over Airbnb And Other ‘Short-Term Rentals’

As online lodging sites like Airbnb continue to transform the tourism industry, Loudoun leaders are taking steps to begin regulating the platform and other “short-term rentals.”

Last week, the board approved a work plan in an effort to set standards for short-term rentals in the county. The approval of the work plan comes as localities around the state are looking into crafting ordinances to regulate short-term rentals.

State code defines short-term residential rentals (STRR) as “a room or space that is suitable or intended for occupancy for dwelling, sleeping, or lodging purposes, for a period of fewer than 30 consecutive days, in exchange for a charge for the occupancy.”

But calls to regulate Airbnb, in particular, have been the loudest.
