Historic 1743 Property Hits the Market for $1.55M

A historic property dating back to 1743 has just been listed for $1,550,000. The property includes the original residence with modern additions, a historic mill, a guest cottage, a three-stable barn and more. The property is located at 3660 Mill Green Road in Street, Maryland and is listed by Sheri McLaughlin of The McLaughlin-Lancelotta Group of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

The original simple stone building and land was owned by Daniel Maxwell and known as “Maxwell’s Inheritance” in the early to mid-1700s. The notorious William Ashmore purchased the land and added the Grist Mill in the 1770s.

For generations, the Ashmore family owned and operated the Mill, which quickly became the center of the growing Mill Green Community. It is recorded that the Mill was used as a polling place in 1775, became a starting point when roads were laid in the area, and was a survey call in land transactions. Rumor has it, the mill burned down and in 1827 and the current mill was built on the original foundation.

In 1933, when milling operations were no longer profitable, the home was turned into a retreat for country living, but much of the land remained untouched. The existing mill race is the only surviving one in Harford County and could be refilled with water from Broad Creek.

The original stone Miller’s home has been carefully restored and expanded to include a conservatory, previously an in-door swimming pool, a renovated gourmet kitchen, two wine cellars, and a multi-tiered deck overlooking expansive views.

Additional property details include:

- Main house with six bedrooms, five bathrooms, five fireplaces and 7,271-square-feet of living space

- 44.97 acres of property, some of which contributes to a Chesapeake Bay initiative

- Access to Broad Creek, which runs directly through the property

- Guest cottage with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a two-car garage

- In-ground pool dating back to the 1800s, converted into a koi pond

- 12-car detached garage with additional workshop space and bath

“There is so much fascinating history behind this property and it is exciting to imagine the activities and community life while the mill was operational,” said Sheri McLaughlin. “The property is truly spectacular with the beautiful, spacious main house and sprawling acreage. It would be ideal as a bed and breakfast or rehab center, like it used to be, or as a wedding venue, a business site. The possibilities for a new owner are endless.”
