WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The fifth annual Race for Every Child on October 21 attracted nearly 5,000 participants to raise awareness and support for children’s health. Hosted by Children’s National Health System, the event at Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington, DC included a 5K run/walk and Kids Dash. The event has raised more than $1.43 million to help fund specialized medical care, expand access to care, and find cures for childhood diseases, and donations are still being accepted.

This year’s race was co-chaired by Melanie and Brigg Bunker and Grace and Campbell Smith. Both families credit Children’s National with saving their child’s life. “As parents, it is comforting to know that one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals is in our backyard,” said the Bunkers. “Children’s National Health System has had a profound impact on our family’s life, but we are not alone. Philanthropy is critical to ensuring that every family gets the same level of world-class care.”

Since its inception in 2013, the Race for Every Child has raised more than $5.7 million to support children’s health, including wellness programs, research, and community health initiatives. The 2017 event raised more than any prior year. Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEO of Children’s National, said, “It is tremendously inspiring to see current and past patients of Children’s National, their families, friends and neighbors come together to build healthier, stronger futures for all kids. The Race for Every Child is truly a celebration of children’s health.”

The top male finisher of the 5K Race was Trever Reed from Washington, DC, who completed the race in 16:05.5. The top female finisher was Karina Lubell, with a time of 19:08.4.
