Norfolk Wants To Buy A Huge Chunk Of Land Near Downtown. The Postal Service Says It’s Not For Sale

The city or its Housing Authority own most of the 200-acre swath just east of downtown where they envision a decade-long redevelopment, which would include demolishing 1,600 public housing units.

There’s one big exception right in the middle: a 19-acre parcel where the U.S. Postal Service runs a processing and distribution center.

The city wants to buy the land, but the Postal Service says it’s not for sale.

Mayor Kenny Alexander said the city will keep pushing to buy the land, which he said could be a “critical” piece of a vision that calls for mixed-income neighborhoods along with parks and other amenities.
