Averett University laid off 12 employees in a cost-cutting measure that targeted staff and administrative positions, spokeswoman Cassie Williams Jones confirmed Thursday.
The layoffs, which took place Monday, were done to address increasing competition for higher-achieving students applying for college and decreasing enrollment of adult students, Jones said.
The job cuts happened within weeks of the start of the new school year -- students returned to class on Aug. 21.
