Hogan Lovells announced today that Edith Ramirez, the former Chairwoman of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), has joined the firm as a partner and co-head of the firm’s Antitrust, Competition and Economic Regulation (ACER) practice.  Ramirez will also play an active role in Hogan Lovells’ Privacy and Cybersecurity practice.

Ramirez will co-lead the global antitrust practice alongside Suyong Kim who is based in London.  Ramirez will be based in Washington, DC and Los Angeles.

Ramirez joined the FTC as a Commissioner in April 2010 and served as FTC Chairwoman from March 2013 to January 2017.

 At the FTC, Ramirez focused on promoting competition, particularly in the technology and healthcare sectors, safeguarding consumer privacy and data security, and protecting vulnerable communities from deceptive and unfair practices.

At the FTC, Ramirez conferred regularly with corporate leaders and key policy makers and joined discussions with antitrust enforcers and privacy and data protection regulators from all over the world.  She also participated in negotiations to create a new data transfer regime and mechanisms for trans-Atlantic data sharing between the United States and the European Union.

Prior to joining the FTC, Ramirez was a litigation partner in a prominent Los Angeles law firm.

Ramirez earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School cum laude, and B.A. in History magna cum laude from Harvard University.
