Lyon Shipyard, which lies nearly hidden on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River, just west of the Campostella Bridge, is on a roll.
It’s recently been awarded Navy contracts worth a little more than $8 million to repair four “berthing barges,” which are essentially floating hotels, quarters for the crews of ships undergoing maintenance and repair work.
The yard also won, along with Chesapeake-based Tecnico Corp., a multiyear contract potentially worth $43 million for work on 12 Navy yard patrol boats used to train cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Another ringer: a state award worth about $1.6 million to repair the ferry Williamsburg, one of the vessels on the Jamestown-Scotland run connecting Surry and James City counties.
