GBMC Healthcare To Host 17th Annual Legacy Chase

8/30/17

GBMC HealthCare Inc. today announced its signature fundraising event, Legacy Chase, will return for its 17th year on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Shawan Downs in Cockeysville, Maryland. Funds raised will benefit the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC.

For this year’s time-honored annual tradition of steeplechase racing and family-friendly fun we introduce Hats, Horses and Hope as the theme for Legacy Chase to celebrate cancer survivors. Each of these symbols create a sense of comfort and strength for cancer patients. While children are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite superhero to help fight cancer, we encourage all guests to boast their best hat to show support for all of our oncology patients. Children will receive a free superhero cape with the purchase of a $10 Kids’ Korner wristband (while cape supplies last). Kids’ Korner wristbands will only be sold onsite on the event day.

“Legacy Chase is such a special event because it brings families together to celebrate survivorship while also continuing to raise funds and awareness for those people who are still fighting,” said John B. Chessare, MD, President and CEO of GBMC HealthCare Inc. “Through a day of fun, including food, games and races – and this year, superheroes and super-hats! – GBMC and our community can support The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute so our patients can receive the best treatment and care possible.”

Stretched across 300 acres of green meadows at the scenic Shawan Downs in Northern Baltimore County, Legacy Chase attracts more than 7,000 equestrian fans, friends and families from across the region for steeplechase races, railside tailgating, live music, great food and family-friendly activities, including the time-honored tradition of the G. Leslie Grimes Stick Pony Race.

Gates open at Shawan Downs at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 23 and Opening Ceremonies commence at 12 p.m. The first of many steeplechase races will kick-off at 1 p.m., and the annual kids’ Stick Pony Races will be held immediately following the second steeplechase race. Guests who purchase GBMC Legacy Club Luncheon tickets will be treated to a buffet lunch and parking pass for Founder’s Hill, but anyone can purchase a parking pass to attend the event and watch from various locations on the hill. Proceeds from the 17th annual Legacy Chase will benefit the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC HealthCare to ensure a healthier future for all. GBMC HealthCare encourages everyone to celebrate survivorship and leave their mark by raising funds for the oncology program.

About Shawan Downs

In the summer of 1997, the heirs to Shawan Farms decided to sell 300 acres of mostly inactive farmland near Hunt Valley in Baltimore County. Unsettled by the growing likelihood that eager homebuilders would transform the tranquil acreage into a clustered, bustling development, a group of local citizens acquired the property under the aegis of the Land Preservation Trust (LPT). The property is now preserved and the intention is to maintain its agricultural legacy. LPT, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, is now engaged in the second phase of the project — Shawan Downs —a world-class equestrian center and steeplechase course. Shawan Downs features horse shows, horse trials and other equestrian activities. In keeping with the center’s preservation mission, no significant infrastructure will be required to accommodate the equestrian facilities.
