Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce that Caroline C. Setliffe has joined the Tax Practice Group as counsel in the Washington DC office. Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, Ms. Setliffe served as counsel at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC.

With more than 15 years of experience—including a stint as an attorney adviser for the US Tax Court—Ms. Setliffe represents multinational corporations, private equity and insurance companies, and financial institutions in complex tax controversy and litigation matters before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and advises clients on a wide range of tax issues associated with their financial transactions and general business activities.

In addition to handling federal tax controversies, Ms. Setliffe’s practice before the IRS includes representing clients in audits, appeals and other administrative matters, and obtaining letter rulings that address consolidated return issues, disclosure requirements, penalty issues and international tax questions.

“We are thrilled to welcome Caroline to Eversheds Sutherland,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Eversheds Sutherland (US) Managing Partner and Co-CEO of Eversheds Sutherland Ltd. “Her background and significant experience in tax controversy matters will add considerably to our strength in that area and will bring great value to our clients.”

With her proficiency in French, Arabic and Armenian, Ms. Setliffe also frequently counsels clients on the cross-border tax implications of insurance mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, debt financings and restructurings. Ms. Setliffe has extensive experience in Subchapter K and Subchapter L tax matters, reinsurance and captive arrangements, and discovery-related matters.

Eversheds Sutherland’s addition of Ms. Setliffe is the latest step in the expansion of its leading Tax Practice Group. Earlier this month, the group welcomed Partner Susan E. Seabrook, resident in the Washington DC office, also from Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC where she led the firm’s DC tax controversy practice.

“Caroline is a natural fit, and her addition reinforces our commitment to growing strategically to meet our US and global clients’ expanding business needs,” said Eversheds Sutherland Partner and US Tax Practice Group Leader Jeffrey A. Friedman. “This is a very exciting time for our tax practice and the Washington DC office.”

Eversheds Sutherland’s tax practice is composed of more than 100 attorneys representing many of the world’s largest corporations—including more than 35 of the Fortune 100—in every industry sector and in virtually every area of tax law, on the federal, international, state and local levels. By virtue of the size of its tax practice and its varied client base, Eversheds Sutherland is active in every area of taxation—from planning the most complex corporate tax transactions to representing taxpayers in administrative and judicial tax controversies.
