After 41 years, the Bristol Mall has announced it will officially close its doors.
Ashwin Desai, the New Jersey-based real estate investor who purchased the mall with three other co-owners in March 2016, confirmed that the mall’s doors will be locked after Aug. 31.
“No one will be allowed inside the building,” Desai said. “The doors will be locked because of liability risks associated with the insurance, and that’s coming from the insurance company.”
The exodus of the Bristol Mall, which opened in 1976 on Gate City Highway, has been a slow, painful process. Historically the smallest of the three Tri-Cities indoor malls, Bristol was hit hard several years ago by a challenging national economy as retails chains, including Sears, J.C. Penney, B. Dalton Bookseller and KB Toys, all shuttered locations or went out of business.
