OTJ Architects has been recognized by the American Institute of Architecture’s Northern Virginia chapter for its innovative design of the Sands Capital Management offices in Arlington, VA. The project received a prestigious Jurors’ Special Citation in the Commercial Interiors division of the chapter’s annual competition. OTJ’s design of the 80,000-square-foot “trophy workplace,” which spans the top four floors of the building at 1000 Wilson Blvd., embraces open space and shared amenities that promote collaboration. It also highlights the offices’ breathtaking views of Washington, D.C., fluidly extending the sleek contemporary interiors through oversized windows and dramatic outdoor space.
“We are honored to be recognized by the AIA,” points out OTJ Managing Partner Lance Jaccard, AIA, IIDA, LEED AP. “The team has delivered a superb workplace that carries high aesthetic value and most importantly, serves our client’s business objectives.”
Key priorities addressed in the design focused on creating an environment conducive to attracting and retaining top talent in the ultra-competitive financial services industry, as well as facilitating staff member wellness and connectivity. Eschewing a traditional corporate layout, OTJ designed a central glass staircase that links the floors, physically and symbolically. Directly surrounding the grand staircase are collaborative spaces, private offices and common area amenities on each floor. The show-stopping penthouse floor features a fully-stocked coffee bar and café, fostering cross-departmental interactions among staff members, and a centrally located glass-enclosed trading room that also serves as a gathering place.
Adds Ania Leeson, OTJ’s Partner for the Sands Capital Project, “The financial world is one that does not stop at 5 p.m. so creating a connected environment within the office and beyond was critical.”
The plush common areas nod to hospitality concepts and include a game room, inviting lounges and library. In addition, there is a stunning rooftop conference space with indoor/outdoor fireplace and panoramic views that encompass the Capital’s world-renowned monuments and distinct architecture.
