Fish & Richardson announced today that Scott Elengold, a principal in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, has been selected as a 2017 International Trade “Rising Star” by Law360. The award honors attorneys under the age of 40 with notable accomplishments in their practice area. Elengold is one of an elite cadre of lawyers who specialize in Section 337 patent litigation at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), and was one of only four attorneys selected for the International Trade Rising Star distinction.

Elengold has secured numerous significant wins at the ITC for client LG Electronics (LG). Most recently, in the first patentability decision to come down under a new 100-day expedited ITC program, Elengold got the ITC to terminate an investigation brought by Creative Labs against client LG Electronics (and other respondents) because the patent was invalid under Alice. As lead counsel for LG, Elengold was the first attorney in the case to request that the ITC use its 100-day expedited program, with attorneys for the other respondents and interveners following Elengold’s strategy with similar requests days later.

Elengold co-led and won another major case for LG Electronics, which began in 2012 when Technology Properties Ltd. (TPL) sued 24 companies claiming infringement on a patent on a clock that controls the speed of a central processing unit, thus making microprocessors faster and more efficient. TPL claimed numerous products infringed their technology, including LG’s smartphones and mobile devices; Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s NOOK e-readers; a Garmin GPS navigation system; some Samsung smartphones; and Nintendo’s DSi game console. The complaint sought an exclusion order so potentially billions of dollars of products were at stake before the ITC issued its noninfringement decision.

Elengold is the recruiting principal for Fish’s Washington, D.C. office. He received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 2005 and his B.A. in computer science and economics from Emory University in 1999.

Law360‘s 2017list of Rising Stars was selected by a team of editors who reviewed more than 1,200 submissions. The final list includes 156 attorneys from more than 75 law firms spanning 35 practice areas. Winners were selected based on their career accomplishments in their respective practice areas.
