Former Orioles catcher and current MASN analyst Rick Dempsey believes Orioles starter Kevin Gausman's struggles this season are based in large part on pitch selection.
"Kevin has got all of the tools to be one of the top right-handers in the game," Dempsey said on Glenn Clark Radio June 30. " … He can get late in ballgames and really turn the dial up to throw 97, 98, 99; he's just not getting himself in a position to be successful. It just comes from making the same mistakes over and over and over again and thinking there is going to be a different result. There just isn't going to be."
Dempsey suggested Gausman should approach two-strike counts differently, and insisted Gausman should throw his curveball low and in the dirt in certain scenarios.
