TowneBank, with $5.1 billion in customer deposits, has overtaken Wells Fargo as the largest bank in Hampton Roads.
Chairman and CEO G. Robert Aston Jr. emphasized his bank’s No. 1 status in Hampton Roads and individual cities and counties (Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, James City County, Currituck, Dare County, Camden County) at a shareholder meeting Wednesday.
“It wasn’t so many years ago we were on the bottom of that list,” he said of the bank he started in 1999.
The company didn’t note its market share in Norfolk, where it ranks third at nearly 13 percent, behind SunTrust and Wells Fargo, still two places higher than a year ago.
