Melvin Mora Hopes Orioles Can Diversify Organization With Venezuelan Players

Despite playing 13 seasons in the majors -- including a stint with the Baltimore Orioles from 2000-2009 -- former third baseman Melvin Mora said he was nervous when he took the oath of citizenship to become a U.S. citizen May 10.

"For me it's special to be a U.S. citizen because this is a country that has given me a lot of opportunity to grow as a person and as a professional player," Mora, a Venezuelan native, told Glenn Clark Radio May 11.

Mora, who was elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame in 2015, still lives in Fallston, Md., and follows the Orioles. He led the team in Wins Above Replacement in 2003 and 2004, hitting a team-record .340 in 2004. Mora was a career .280 hitter as an Oriole.
