4/19/17

Military.com announced today Hope Hodge Seck, a reporter and associate editor for the website, has been awarded the prestigious Marine Corps Heritage Foundation's 2017 Heinl Award for her article, "13 Years After Iraq, the Marines of 'Generation Kill' Regret Nothing."

The award recognizes "exemplary work in advancing and preserving Marine Corps history." Recipients receive a cash prize, a medallion and a commemorative brick along the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park pathway at the Marine Corps Heritage Center. Seck will be honored with the award at a ceremony later this month at the Marine Corps History Museum.

"The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has a stellar tradition of honoring the history and legacy of Marines. I'm greatly honored to accept this award for a story about contemporary Marine Corps legends," said Seck.

"Hope is a tremendously talented reporter and her work is a testament to her dedication and skill in covering defense issues. She's always enjoyed a sterling reputation among journalists and we're proud to have her on our team and see her honored in this way," said Brendan McGarry, managing editor for Military.com.

Seck's story is about the Marines of Bravo Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion who invaded Iraq in 2003. They were profiled in a book "Generation Kill," and were also portrayed in an HBO mini-series of the same name.

Lt. Gen. Robert R. Blackman, Jr., president and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation said, "All our award honorees have contributed to the preservation and promulgation of Marine Corps history through extraordinary works that tell a piece of the Marine Corps story."

The Heinl Award is given for feature writing and is named after Colonel Robert Debs Heinl, Jr., a Marine veteran who fought at Pearl Harbor and retired as a syndicated columnist. The award is given for a "distinguished example of feature writing by an individual dealing with U.S. Marine Corps history or Marine Corps life, giving prime consideration for high literary quality and originality."

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the history, traditions and culture of the Marine Corps and educate the public about the Corps. The Foundation oversees the development of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center and its educational activities.
