Terps Fall Flat Against Northwestern In Big Ten Quarterfinal

University of Maryland junior guard Melo Trimble had 20 points and the Terps led by as many as 10 early in the second half against Northwestern, but Maryland succumbed to a 20-2 Wildcats run in the second half and fell, 72-64, to Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. March 10.

Maryland’s next game will likely fall on March 16 or 17 as part of the round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps’ seed and matchup will be revealed March 12. But Maryland had grander visions than sitting out the final two days of the Big Ten Tournament, especially given the thousands of raucous Terps fans they played in front of March 10 and would have played in front of the next two days.

The Terps (24-8 overall) entered halftime the right way against Northwestern, with senior forward L.G. Gill hitting a jumper on the block that gave the Terps a 36-34 lead. Maryland had been down by as many as 10 points in the first half, but the Terps closed the half on an 18-6 run, including Gill’s bucket to end the stanza.
