For St. Paul's Basketball Coach Seth Goldberg, The Title Was Secondary

Seth Goldberg, who just finished his 11th season at the helm of the St. Paul's boys' basketball team, likes to set unorthodox goals for his team at the outset of a season.

While many coaches would lay out a plan that includes a number of wins to target, Goldberg, who describes himself as a process-oriented person, never discusses things like that with his team. To him, he would much rather see his players aim for lofty goals in terms of becoming more mature, which is measured on the basketball court in numerous ways, including body language, on-court interaction and placing the team's success ahead of the individual.

It's tough to argue with the approach -- St. Paul's finished with a 19-8 overall record this season, including an 11-2 mark in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association "B" conference play. The Crusaders' season ended with a 59-47 win against Annapolis Area Christian School in the league championship Feb. 28, the program's third during Goldberg's tenure.
