Shareholders of Genworth Financial Inc. voted to approve the company’s proposed acquisition by a China-based investment company.
Genworth, a Henrico County-based insurance company with thousands of employees in Virginia, announced in October that it had agreed to be acquired for about $2.7 billion by China Oceanwide, a privately held, family-owned international financial holding company based in Beijing.
“It’s a big milestone,” Genworth’s President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. McInerney said after the company held a special shareholder meeting Tuesday morning at the Westin Richmond hotel in Henrico County.
