Equinix Buys Ashburn Land For $34.5 Million To Expand Local Data Center Operation

Global interconnection and data center company Equinix on Thursday announced it has purchased four parcels of land spanning 34.5 acres in Ashburn to grow its data center footprint in Loudoun County.

The acquisition of the property will provide Equinix with room to build multiple new greenfield International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers in this densely interconnected location, according to a new release. Equinix currently has 10 International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers covering more than 500,000 square feet in D.C metro area.

The four parcels of Ashburn land bought for $34.5 million -- proximate to the existing Equinix campus at the corner of Waxpool Road and Loudoun County Parkway -- are part of the company's overall strategy to buy land and buildings to increase ownership of Equinix assets, according to the company. Over the last four quarters, Equinix has purchased land to expand its key campuses in Ashburn, Silicon Valley and Chicago. It has also bought data center buildings in Amsterdam, Paris and Rio de Janerio.
