Veterans make up more than 22 percent of Stratford’s workforce This marks second year in a row Stratford is honored

Stratford University is pleased to announce they have received the 2016 V3 Perseverando Award from Governor Terry McAuliffe for their ongoing commitment to creating employment opportunities for Virginia’s veterans. The 4th Annual V3 Awards were presented in conjunction with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Annual Workforce Conference on September 28.

A certified Virginia Values Veterans (V3) business, Stratford University received the Perseverando Award (meaning “to persevere”) in the Large Company (301-1,000 employees) category. This is the second year in a row Stratford has received this prestigious award.

“Stratford University is so honored to have received the Perseverando Award from Governor McAuliffe. My father, who was a Navy veteran, founded the school 40 years ago, and we have always maintained a strong commitment to veterans, active duty military members, and their families,” said Dr. Richard Shurtz, President of Stratford University. “We look forward to continuing our support of veterans to help them succeed in the next chapter of their careers.”

From July 2015 through June 2016, Stratford hired 30 veterans, increasing the overall percent of veterans to 22.9 percent of the total workforce. This year alone, Stratford has held 71 Veteran-focused events across seven campuses; hosted two V3 training events; partnered with 25 local veteran-servicing offices and local businesses to support veterans; and hosted seven annual events featuring local military and civic leaders.

Stratford University also provides a wide range of veteran engagement activities for students year round, and they established a one-stop service shop for military and veteran students at each campus and hired full-time veterans to work with students and new veteran employees to help them transition.

The V3 program, which is maintained by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Veterans Services, helps employers understand, design, and implement nationally recognized best practices in recruiting, hiring, and retaining veterans.
