As part of an ongoing program to celebrate and accelerate East Coast innovators and company-builders, MAVA will highlight a select group of 20 startups at its first of three TechBUZZ events in 2014. The TechBUZZ Spring 2014 event will be held at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club on March 25th in Bethesda, Maryland. Each company will take the public stage to share their story in front of an audience of investors, technology executives and fellow entrepreneurs. These 20 seed and early stage presenters will represent a sample of some of the most highly innovative endeavors being built today.
Presenting companies were selected from a competitive pool of diverse start-ups from across the region by a MAVA industry group of business advisors and active technology investors. The start-ups chosen for formal presentation slots will each take the stage for four minutes to describe their respective company, philosophy and products. Each company will have worked with an industry advisor to help them shape their presentation for the audience of investors and like-minded entrepreneurs and also offer tips for launching commercially.
?TechBUZZ offers an incredible platform for connecting up-and-coming companies from across the Mid-Atlantic with the many contributors who share in a start-up?s success, including seed and angel investors, corporate business partners and fellow entrepreneurs, all the while highlighting these companies on stage during a 4-minute pitch,? said Julia Spicer, Executive Director of MAVA. ?For companies both on the stage and in our audience, TechBUZZ helps to accelerate the growth of early-stage companies as they take their product or service to the commercial market.?
TechBUZZ Spring 2014 will feature a wide range of technology sectors, reflecting the growth of start-ups in the greater Mid-Atlantic region, which has become ground zero for many of the newest ideas, game-changing innovations, and cutting-edge applications of technology in recent years. This year, companies from nascent to seed stage will present ideas from a number of hot technology sectors to their peers and potential partners. The 20 companies to be on stage for the Spring TechBUZZ are from Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Since 2011, TechBUZZ presenting companies have received in total more than $75 million in disclosed funding, with many more investments and acquisitions remaining in undisclosed terms.
?When it's your first time raising money, the process can get overwhelming,? shared TechBUZZ Georgetown presenter James Li of Encore. ?TechBUZZ Georgetown gave us the perfect stage to get started and get our name out there. The quality of the crowd is one of the best, if not the best, I've seen at a pitch event, and many investors we met at the event eventually funded us. It's one of those events you should really want to prepare for and make the most of, because you can expect a lot of doors to open,? Li said, whose recent successes include landing early financing as well as an important new customer.
The TechBUZZ agenda includes a two investor feedback panels who will share insights with all companies in attendance. Panelists for the March 25th event include Dayna Grayson of NEA, Deric Emry of ABS Capital, Mike Cooley of Sprint New Ventures, Tom Dann of the Maryland Venture Fund and Denis Seynhaeve, an active local Angel investor. This feedback provides the start-ups on stage and the entrepreneurs in the audience with valuable insight into the diverse approaches and priorities of multiple investors and a realistic perspective on how to shape products and concepts as well as build their companies.
