Bennett J. Beres,
GBMC HealthCare, parent company of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center hospital, has named a healthcare veteran as chief operating officer for Greater Baltimore Medical Associates (GBMA), a group of more than 40 multi-specialty physician practices.
Bennett (Ben) J. Beres, who has spent his entire career of nearly three decades in the healthcare arena, will oversee GBMA's operations in practices on the hospital's Towson campus as well as in office locations across the region. Charged with day-to-day responsibility for the management of GBMA, Beres will work closely with Mark Lamos, M.D., medical director of primary care, and with Neri Cohen, M.D., medical director of specialty care, in executing the organization's employed physician strategy.
GBMA offers expertise in a wide variety of medical specialties, including cardiology, family practice, geriatrics, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, general and specialty surgery and oncology. GBMA practices experienced nearly 270,000 patient visits in FY2011.
"This opportunity is a natural fit for me," said Beres, who worked closely with GBMC's president/CEO John Chessare, M.D. while both were at Boston Medical Center and shares Dr. Chessare's vision of achieving the Triple Aim of Better Health, Better Care at a Lower Cost.
"Everything we do in healthcare today needs to be geared toward making the experience excellent for the patient," Beres said. "With healthcare reform and the implementation of technology and the patient-centered medical home, this is an exciting time to work with physician practices."
Beres joins GBMA from Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor, Vt., where he served as chief operating officer. With their leadership team, Beres played an instrumental role in the organization receiving the 2011 Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service, a prestigious healthcare community service honor presented by the American Hospital Association. Beres also has held leadership positions with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and with Boston Medical Center, Quincy Medical Center and New England Baptist Hospital, all in Massachusetts.
Beres earned a graduate certificate in public health (CPH) from the Harvard University Extension School and the School of Public Health and a bachelor of arts degree from Drew University.
