Strayer Education Q4 Earnings Preview

Strayer University (NASDAQ:STRA) is a for-profit post-secondary education services corporation. Its institutions offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The company is scheduled to report its fourth quarter earnings on Thursday, February 16, 2012.
Expectations: Analysts are expecting the company to come in with earnings of $2.26 per share, down 17.2% from a year ago, when it reported earnings of $2.73 per share. Analysts are projecting earnings of $8.83 per share for the fiscal year. The company's revenue is expected to fall short of last year's reported $172 million by 10% to come in at $154.8 million for the quarter. Expected revenue for the fiscal year is $626.4 million.
Performance: A drop in revenue in the third quarter came after three straight quarters of rising revenue. Revenue fell 7.9% in the third quarter and rose 2.8%in the second quarter, 8.9% in the first quarter and 16.8% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The company has seen net income fall in each of the last three quarters. In third quarter, net income fell 40.3% from the year earlier, while the figure fell 16.9% in the second quarter and 1.6% in the first quarter. The stock price has increased from $95.98 on November 15, 2011 to $115.04 over the past quarter. The biggest recent change for Strayer Education's stock price came on January 10, 2012, when it rose $8.76 per share to $107.74.
Ratings: Most analysts (nine of 13) rate Strayer Education a hold. The rating has remained constant for the past three months.
