ANNANDALE, Va. -- myRete, the makers of the WhosHere social networking app for the iPhone, raised $1.25 million in equity financing.

Named in the related SEC filing were co-founder & COO Stephen Smith, co-founder and CEO Bryant Harris, and directors Bradley Keywell, Chicago-based founder of Groupon; Paul Lee; and Larry Harris.

According to the Washington Business Journal, Smith and Bryant Harris were freshman-year roommates at Washington University and had planned to start a business together for years.

The company, launched in 2008, reported last month that its revenue has surpassed $1 million. The company says it has become profitable without institutional investors.

WhosHere has over 3.0 million users in over 150 countries, where the app is localized in Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Thai. The most common uses of WhosHere include dating, making new friends, chatting with like minded people, looking for jobs, selling stuff, looking for clients, promoting bands, practicing foreign language skills with native speakers and virtual tourism.

Rete is Italian for "network." The company also has an offices in San Mateo, Calif.
