HERNDON, Va. -- ePals Inc. has raised $9.14 million from a $12 million offering while attracting 20 investors.

The infusion represents more than $2 million in new capital, augmenting a prior offering from which the Herndon, Va.-based schools technology provider had raised $6.8 million last May, as citybizlist reported at the time.

Executives named in a recent SEC filing include:

- Edmund Fish, president and CEO
- Nina Zolt, co-founder and chief learning officer
- Aric Holsinger, CFO

Also named were the following members of the board of directors:

- Miles Gilburne, from D.C.-based ZG Ventures
- William Campbell, previously from Discovery Networks
- Stephen Arnold, from Boston-based Polaris Ventures
- Phil Bronner, from Bethesda, Md.-based Novak Biddle Venture Partners
- Robert DiScipio, from Aegis Analytical Corporation
- Ted Prince, from Lotus
- William Raduchel, previously from America Online
- Mitchell Kapor

ePals, Inc. offers K-12 schools, teachers, students, and parents an online communications and collaboration platform to develop connections, provide digital content, and facilitate learning. ePals says that its online community consists of more than 700,000 educators and reaches more than 25 million students and parents in 200 countries and territories.

Bios:

Edmund Fish
Prior to joining ePals, Ed Fish was Senior Vice President and General Manager of Premium and Subscription Services at AOL, responsible for creating, building businesses for, and launching more than a dozen subscription and free consumer products, including online education products for students and parents. He also served as the Senior Vice President and General Manager for AOL Desktop Messaging, with responsibility for AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and ICQ. Previously, Fish was Director and a President of InterTrust Technologies Corp., the leading digital rights management firm. With the founder, he took InterTrust from start-up phase to a market-leading NASDAQ-traded company, forging relationships with, among others, Bertelsmann, Universal Music, Mitsubishi, and NatWest Bank. Prior to InterTrust, Fish worked with a leading intellectual property law firm, where he focused on technology transactions and intellectual property for emerging technology companies.

Philip Bronner
Philip Bronner joined Novak Biddle Venture Partners in 1999 and is focused on investments in information technology. Prior to joining Novak Biddle he founded a media technology company. In addition, he served as a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. in New York advising high-tech clients on corporate strategy and worked as a software engineer at IBM.

Phil has been named one of Washington, D.C. area's 100 "Tech Titans" and serves on the board of 2Tor, Clearspring, SolidFire, Webs, Fidelis College,Vision Chain, and Approva. He also leads Novak Biddle's investments inInfoblox, Panasas and LifeShield Security. Past board or board observer seats include: N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Clear Standards (acquired bySAP), Social Gaming Network (acquired by Mindjolt), AnswerLogic (acquired by Primus Knowledge Systems) and Logic Library (acquired by SOA Software).

Phil earned a BS in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University; a Juris Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Law; and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Phil currently serves on the Alumni Advisory Board for Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and is a board member for In2Books, a Washington, DC-based reading and literacy program.

Steve Arnold
Prior to starting Polaris, Steve served as a special advisor to Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co. following more than 10 years in executive positions in the software industry. He served as vice president of Broadband Media Applications at Microsoft Corporation and as president and CEO of Continuum Productions (now Corbis), a private company founded by Bill Gates to pioneer the creation of large digital libraries for online distribution. Before coming to Continuum, Steve served as vice president and general manager of LucasArts Games and Learning divisions, and vice president of the New Media Group at Lucasfilm Ltd. He continues to serve as vice chairman of the board of directors of the George Lucas Educational Foundation.

Nina Zolt
Nina Zolt is the Co-Chair, Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer at ePals Inc. Her work in education has focused on improving learning opportunities for all students in a digital age. She has extensive experience as an entertainment lawyer, digital media executive, and designer of digital learning products. She is the founder of In2Books. She served as a member of the Washington D.C. Advisory Board of Directors for Teach for America (2000-2011) and the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (2004-2010). She also served as an Advisory Board Member for the International Reading Association (2009-2010). She is the lead author of the In2Books Genre Guides and a co-author of Getting Children In2Books: Engagement in Authentic Reading, Writing and Thinking (Phi Delta Kappan, 2007). She received an honorary doctorate from National-Louis University in 2004.
