WASHINGTON -- The national capital, "where staying connected can get out the vote, and virtual handshakes help shape our nation," is the most socially networked city in the United States , according to a listing by Men's Health magazine.

The study ranked Washington , D.C. , at the top of 100 cities, ahead of those in the Silicon Valley region including Palo Alto , home of the social networking company Facebook.

Other cities on citybizlist's radar figuring into the top 10 were:

2. Atlanta
7. Orlando, Fla.
9. Boston

In North Carolina , Raleigh was ranked 12th, and Charlotte came in 21st.

In Texas , Dallas was ranked 16th, and Houston came in at 48th.

In South Florida , Tampa ranked 31st, Miami was at the 36th spot and St. Petersburg came in at No. 88.

In Pennsylvania , Philadelphia was ranked 49th and Pittsburgh 63rd.

New York was a surprisingly low 53 on the list, and Baltimore ranked 58th.

Men's Health said it arrived at the ranking by first calculating the number of Facebook and LinkedIn users per capita, followed by overall Twitter usage, as measured by NetProspex. It then examined traffic generated by the major social networks, which was analyzed by ad network Chitika. "Finally, after factoring in the percentage of households that check out chat rooms and blogs (SimplyMap), we had the results," the magazine said.
