WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A hedge fund sponsored by Rock Creek Group, led by Afsaneh Mashayekhi Beschloss, launched with $100 million, according to an SEC filing.

Prudence Crandall Fund III, LLC is named for a Quaker schoolteacher who stirred controversy with her education of African-American girls in Canterbury, Conn. Her private school was boycotted when she admitted a 17-year-old African-American female student in the autumn of 1833, resulting in what is widely regarded as the first integrated classroom in the United States.

Beschloss is a United States national who is currently the president and chief executive officer of the Rock Creek Group. She was previously a Managing Director at the Carlyle Group and treasurer and chief investment officer of the World Bank. She has also worked for J.P. Morgan in New York and London, for Shell International Group Planning in London, and taught international trade at Oxford University. She is chairman of the Investment Committee of the Ford Foundation and is on the Investment Committee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. She is a member of the board of trustees of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Urban Institute. Her husband is presidential historian Michael Beschloss.

The Rock Creek Group, formerly known as Carlyle Asset Management Group, is a hedge fund sponsor that was founded in 2001 and is based in Washington, D.C.
