Lockheed Martin Leads, Smithfield Foods Lags Local Companies in Newsweek’s Green Rankings – cbl

BETHESDA, Md. -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) led local companies in Newsweek's Green Rankings, placing in the top 100, while Smithfield Foods (NYSE:SFD) trailed the others in the bottom 100.
Newsweek's Green Rankings looked at the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States to compile an overall Green Score - derived from an aggregation of environmental impact, environmental management, and disclosure.
Following are the Washington D.C. area companies that made the list, their rankings, and the green score:
- Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), ranked 90, with a green score of 60.8
- Marriott International (NYSE:MAR), ranked 125, with a green score of 57.7
- Genworth Financial (NYSE:GNW), ranked 142, with a green score of 56.8
- Discovery Communications (Nasdaq:DISCA), ranked 146, with a green score of 56.6
- Capital One Financial (NYSE:COF), ranked 147, with a green score of 56.6
- Coventry Health (NYSE:CVH), ranked 170, with a green score of 55.4
- Washington Post (NYSE:WPO), ranked 231, with a green score of 69.9
- General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), ranked 266, with a green score of 50.1
- Carmax (NYSE:KMX), ranked 326, with a green score of 47.6
- Nii Holdings (Nasdaq:NIHD), ranked 328, with a green score of 47.5
- Dominion Resources (NYSE:D), ranked 335, with a green score of 47.1
- Danaher (NYSE:DHR), ranked 384, with a green score of 44.9
- Smithfield Foods (NYSE:SFD), ranked 417, with a green score of 42.4
Newsweek said that it collaborated with environmental research firms Trucost and Sustainalytics to produce its Green Rankings while determining company size based on revenue, market capitalization, and number of employees.
IBM topped Newsweek's rankings with an overall green score of 82.5.
